Cakewalk Raises $397 for Elks National Foundation (ENF)
At Member Appreciation Day on September 18th, Lodge 351 members "walked" to win one of 29 cakes donated by members of the Lodge. Judging by the expressions on the winners´ faces, it was hard to tell who was more pleased to win a cakethe children or the adults. They all seemed quite pleased to be a winner.
One member was unsuccessful in wining his "dream cake"—Norma Baldwin´s Viagra infused, double chocolate cake. After five unsuccessful attempts and with no more tickets available, Phil Phillips muttered to no one in particular, "Well, I guess I´ll just have to buy my own Viagra."
The Cakewalk, an idea from Debs Ryder, was coordinated by Brenda Hyde. The response to the requests for cake donations was gratifying. Two people, Nancy McCray and Ann Demory, actually donated two cakes. Charlotte Fitzgerald and Linda Phillips proved to be excellent ticket sellers and quickly sold 290 cakewalk tickets. Lodge 351 ENF Chair, Ken Pawlik, did an outstanding job at the microphone keeping the members informed, enthused and filling the chairs for a chance at the next cake. Thank you to everyone involved in making the cakewalk a success.
Appreciation Day Crowd Pleaser
The dunking booth at Member Appreciation Day drew a large number of onlookers, and raised $151, after expenses, in donations for ENF.
Debs Ryder, as the lead off "dunkee," drew a lot of crowd response and the most dollars. She was followed by Will Dod, age 8, who leapt at the chance for a turn in the dunking booth.
Not wanting Lodge 351 to become known as the Lodge where men are dry and "dunkees" are women and children, Jeff Byrd, Robbie Miller and ENF Chairman Ken Pawlik climbed up and took their turn in the booth. Thank you "dunkees," ER Tim Welch and ENF Chair Ken Pawlik for your participation.

1750 Pairs of Safety Glasses to Augusta County Schools
July 30, 2010, Staunton Elks Lodge 351 presents 1750 pairs of safety glasses to Augusta County Schools. From left to right: Lisa Shifflett (Curriculum Supervisor), Paul Hiveley (Lodge 351), Dr. Chuck Bishop (Superintendent of Augusta County Schools), Rowland Byrd (Lodge 351), Mike Miller (Lodge 351), Otis Holley (Lodge 351), Buck Robinson (Lodge 351) and Dr Pam Ungar (Assistant Superintendent of Instruction).
Distributing safety glasses to Virginia Schools is a three year old program that is a major focus of the Virginia Elks Association (VEA). Started in 2008 by Lodge 351 member Dr. Robert Hinkle when he was VEA State President, the Safety Glasses Program provided more than 3,000 pairs of Safety Glasses the first year to high school students attending the various Regional Career and Technical Training Centers across the State of Virginia.
In 2010, the Safety Glasses Program was expanded to include the high schools in the communities of the 31 Virginia Elks Lodges that make up the VEA. This year the program antici-pates that 7500 pairs of safety glasses will be distributed to schools across Virginia.
On August 12 Staunton Elks Lodge 351 presented 80 pairs of safety glasses to the Staunton schools and 400 pairs in partnership with Waynesboro Elks Lodge 2270 to Valley Vocational Technical School. The Virginia Elks Association pays 60% of the cost of the safety glasses with the local Elks Lodge paying the balance.
The Elks National Foundation (ENF), the charitable arm of B.P.O.E. national organization, is a major source of fund-ing for the Virginia Elks Association. This year the ENF will return to Virginia $1.83 for every $1.00 raised by Virginia Elks. In 2010 this will amount to $169,300, which includes $48,000 in college scholarships awarded to high school seniors.>
